Christmas At Aunt Reva’s

Daniela Brookshire could not believe her eyes as she pulled up the gravelled driveway of her Aunt Reva’s country house.

Rumor had it that every Christmas Aunt Reva’s turned her house’s front window into a grand Christmas display that could easily be mistaken for that of a grand department store Christmas display.

According to her mother Ruth that year would not be any different.

Although it had been snowing heavily, Daniela had no trouble seeing the driveway in front of her.

Daniela pulled up to the garage and parked. She got her purse and her keys, got out of her sedan and locked up her sedan. She got the Christmas presents from out of the trunk and walked up onto the front porch.

As Daniela carefully mounted the porch steps and approached the front door, she noticed there was no Christmas display in the front window. Daniela rang the doorbell.

Minutes later, Daniela’s cousin Laura Brailly answered the front door.

“Hi, cuz.” Laura smiled.

“Hi, cuz.” Daniela smiled back.

“Where’s the rest?” Laura curiously asked.

“They’ll be here tonight.” Daniela answered.

Laura stepped aside as Daniela entered the two story country house. Laura closed the front door. They walked into the luxurious peach colored living room to the long white sofas and matching white easy chairs.

Aunt Reva was a woman of forty something with thick, waist length blonde hair and pale white skin. She was lounging on one of the white sofas near the fireplace.

Daniela crossed to Aunt Reva and hugged her.

“Merry Christmas, Aunt Reva.” Daniela smiled.

“Merry Christmas, child.” Aunt Reva smiled back. “Where’s the rest?”

“They’ll be here tonight.” Daniela answered.

Daniela crossed to the easy chair across from her aunt and sat down in it as she put her purse on the floor next to the easy chair.

“Aunt Reva, you’re not decorating for Christmas this year?” Daniela asked, crossing her legs.

“No.” Aunt Reva admitted.

“Why not?” Daniela asked.

“Don’t have the strength this year.” Aunt Reva confessed.

Daniela looked over at Laura with a question look on her face.

“Mom’s still recuperating from her gallbladder surgery.” Laura explained.

“Oh.” Daniela mouthed.

“You hungry, child?” Aunt Reva asked.

“I can eat.” Daniela confessed. “What do you have?”

“Fried chicken with mashed potatoes and chicken gravy.” Aunt Reva said.

“Sounds great.” Daniela smiled. “I’ll take some.”

“All we got are chicken legs.” Laura said.

“My favorite.” Daniela smiled.

“Come into the kitchen and I’ll warm you up a plate.” Laura offered.

“Great!” Daniela smiled, getting up from the easy chair.

Daniela followed Laura into the kitchen. While Laura fixed and warmed up a plate of fried chicken with mashed potatoes and chicken gravy, Daniela got a cold Mr. Cola from out of the fridge and sat down at the large round table.

Laura got Daniela’s silverware and handed it to her cousin, retrieved the hot meal from out of the microwave and sat it on the table in front of her cousin.

“Thanks, cuz.” Daniela smiled.

“You’re welcome, cuz.” Laura smiled, joining her at the table.

Daniela ate her delicious fried chicken meal.

“How about you and I put up the Christmas display this year?” Daniela asked, between bites.
